I thought this was an interesting article on Trump’s Vice-Presidential pick. I was also recently watching one of CNN’s “discussions” on Pence. They talked of the positive and negatives of this pick, but ultimately came to the conclusion that “no one votes for the vice-president.” They also pointed out that there will be only one vice presidential debate. So, you will have to be diligent in your own research of who these candidates are and what they believe in. I hope this article can be a starting point that will begin your education in the upcoming election.

As a side note: This blog has also provided a link to local Maui candidates in the November elections.

I encourage everyone to watch tonight’s episode of Frontline on PBS at 10 pm (HST). With all the problems currently in the United States dealing with racism, violence, bigotry, and close-mindedness it might be wise to look at another country’s attempt to repress its people. We definitely are not Saudi Arabia….but we are slowly moving towards a country that militarizes its police forces and takes away its people’s liberty in the name of security. The American people must take an active role in their society. They must learn who their candidates really are…and not just for President. Know your state representatives, senators, and council members!! Everything begins at the local level, so do a little research and become a knowledgeable citizen. Make your voice be heard! It does matter!!
The Saudi Arabia the world usually sees is a country of wealth and luxury shopping malls.
FRONTLINE, Saudi Arabia Uncovered,
draws on stunning undercover footage that depicts adifferent
side of life in the country — including stark poverty, violence against women, strict religious police in action, and ordinary people who are trying to bring about change.
It’s a rare and surprising look inside the tightly-controlled Saudi kingdom.
The Maui Time has begun to provide its readers with short interviews of the candidates running in the upcoming election. I urge all my students to read these so they will be informed of where each candidate stands. Spread the word among your friends and get them interested in this important election and the future of their island community. You will be the leaders of tomorrow so be sure that the leaders of today are doing their jobs!! And remember that “Democracy is not a Spectator Sport”!!
The interviews can be found throughout the “politics” section of Maui Time. I have provided a link below to get you there…now you just have to read!!
Maui County Candidate Interviews
I just read an article in the Lahaina News about the West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative. The organization “aims to enlist, engage and inspire Maui residents to become more informed and involved in mauka to makai stewardship activities in West maui.” They will be holding a community event at Kahekili Beach Park (Airport Beach) on Saturday, July 23rd from 9 am to 12 pm.
Here is a link to the article:
